Charles and I first met at school, the Queen Elizabeth 1 grammar school in Darlington. We pursued similar subjects like Maths, Physics and Chemistry and were the best of pals. We went to many youth clubs, dances and parties together and shared girl friends. Charles introduced me to Buddy Holly (I have his entire set of recordings) and taught me how to clean my teeth properly. We both went on to university in Newcastle. Although we were in different halls and doing different courses we still met up in the students union and at R&B sessions. After Uni we both went out separate ways, but Charles was best man at my wedding to Pat. We also developed a shared interest in sailing. Although we only met up again occasionally the rest of our lives, we had an easy friendship and seemed to be able to pick up where we left off. A man of diverse interests and a dry sense of humour, he will be remembered fondly. Our thoughts are with Lesley and the family.
